DIY Grass House Numbers

September 5, 2019 - No Comments - 3 min read

*This DIY was a sponsored paid project with B&Q and Erbauer for Instagram. I wasn’t asked to share on here but wanted to do so anyway.

This was a DIY project for Instagram back in March, but I thought it would make a nice blog post to share on here too. These DIY grass house numbers are seriously simple, inexpensive and something a bit quirky! I’ve added ours next to the back gate (it’s on a separate street so always confuses people!) but you could make these for the front of your house, or even a smaller version to go on your door!

So if you want to know how they’re made, then keep reading for the full DIY tutorial!

How to Make Your Own DIY Faux Grass House Number

BUILD TIME: A Few Hours

Total Spent: Under £15

Difficulty: Easy

You Will Need:

Step 1 – Create a Template for Your House Numbers

First up, you’re going to need a template for your numbers. The easiest way to do this is by printing out some numbers from your computer. This gives you the option to choose any font you want and any size too! I’ve stuck to something quite simple and my number filled around 3/4 of an A4 sheet of paper. Our house number is 27, so that’s what I’ve got here!

Step 2 – Cut Around Your Template and Draw onto an offcut of Wood

You’ll need some treated wood to use outdoors, so I’ve used an offcut of gravel board, which I think is the perfect size for this project. You could also use a scaffold plank though if you have one lying around! Cut out your template with scissors and then use a pen to draw around it, marking it up onto your piece of wood.

Step 3 – Cut out Your Numbers Using a Jigsaw

Next, you can cut out your numbers using a jigsaw. Depending on the number you have to cut, this may be really simple or a little more complex. The number 7, for example, was nice and easy with its straight lines. With something like a number 8, may need you to drill a hole into the middle first to insert your jigsaw blade to be able to cut out the centre part.

You’ll need to make sure your wood is securely clamped on a solid and sturdy surface when cutting otherwise your jigsaw will bounce all over the place. I’m using Erbauer’s new cordless jigsaw for this, which was sent to me for the purpose of this DIY.

Step 4 – Cut Your Numbers Out Onto Some Faux Grass and Nail to the Wood

Using the same template as before (or you can now use your wooden cuts if you prefer!), draw your number onto the backing of the faux grass (remembering to flip your number around so it’s mirrored backwards) and then cut out using either scissors or a knife. This can be a little awkward if your backing is super tough, but it is do-able.

Once cut, use some small galvanised nails to affix the faux grass onto the wood. The nail heads should be hidden nicely by the grass itself.

Step 5 – Affix to Wall or House

To affix your numbers to the wall, you’ll need to install some picture fixings onto the back of the numbers. Once this is done, you can hold your numbers against the wall where you want to place them, drill out some holes, insert some wall plugs and screw your numbers to the wall! Voila – job done.

And that’s it! Your DIY grass house numbers are done. As mentioned, I’m using mine next to our back gate – but these could be used anywhere! I even think they’d even make a great gift and you could always paint the wood for a slightly different look too.

Let me know if you give this DIY a go! Feel free to tag me on Instagram or drop me a message – hope you enjoy making them!
