DIY Dog Toy Basket for the Garden

May 1, 2015 - No Comments - 3 min read

Having two dogs means having LOTS and lots of toys. I mean lots. When the summer brings the sun, our dogs love nothing better than taking every single toy out of the house and into the garden. Balls, Frisbee’s, stuffed toys, you name it, the garden turns into a crazy mess of doggy toy heaven!

Since we have so many toys and our toy storage is becoming increasingly more full by the week (some might say our dogs are spoilt rotten!) – I thought it might be a good time to create a new storage solution for the ‘outdoor’ toys. Which is generally any toy they decide to leave outside to be rained upon, weed upon, left in the mud.. you get the picture.

So I’m building a DIY outdoor dog toy basket! All the materials used in this little DIY project are materials we already had lying around the house, which meant this project cost absolutely nothing at all!

You Will Need:

  • Flower basket
  • Spray Paint
  • Scrap Piece of Wood
  • Permanent Marker (or Paint)
  • Wood Oil

Step 1 – Spray Basket with Paint

I decided to use a flower basket for the storage part – not only is it the perfect size and easy to fit against a wall, but it also allows the drainage of rainwater. This means none of the toys will be sitting in months of water and dirt during the wet months!

The spray paint I used here is Rustoleum’s Bright Copper spray paint, which is also the same paint I used to paint the garden gnome. I absolutely love the copper finish! It’s not the usual colour you would find in the garden, but I love it!

Step 2 – Write Onto Scrap Piece of Wood

I then found a scrap piece of wood that had been left in the attic from the previous owner. Using a regular permanent marker, I drew on the wording ‘Toys’. This marker sinks into the wood really well and once dried doesn’t budge.

Step 3 – Oil the Wood

The wood was already quite aged in its look, but I added a teak oil over the top as well. This really brings out the colour in the wood and it also protects it too. I also used a wood sealant over the top as well, just to give added protection!

Step 4 – Affix to Wall

Finally, I then affixed both the basket and the wooden sign to the wall. It’s fairly low down so that the dogs can get to the toys themselves. I’m sure it won’t stay full of toys for very long though!

And that’s it! I hope you like, as you can see Doug certainly seems to! 😉
