DIY Star Chalkboard

I love a challenge, so when Rustoleum got in touch asking if I’d like to join in with their DIY challenge, I simply couldn’t say no. This DIY star chalkboard is super simple, inexpensive and can be used in a whole heap of different ways!

For this particular challenge, I’ve styled it for use at a wedding, but this would also be great for using around the house, in a shed, or you could even make them and give away as gifts!

How to Make a DIY Star Chalkboard

You Will Need:

Scrap piece of wood
Jigsaw (I’m using this one)
Sandpaper
Chalkboard paint
Chalk

For the ‘Wedding Theme’:

Plant Pots
Chalky paint
Flowers
Balloons
Ribbon/Twine
Pages of a Book/Newspaper
Paperclips

Step 1 – Cut Your Wood Into a Star Shape

Using a Christmas decoration as a stencil, I’ve marked out a star shape onto an old scrap piece of wood. The wood I’m using is from an old tabletop, but you can use any wood for this.

Once cut, I made sure to sand any edges that were a little rough from the jigsaw. 120 grit sandpaper is ideal for this.

Step 2 – Paint in Chalkboard Paint

I’ve used Rustoleum’s chalkboard paint for this – it dries super fast and only requires two coats!

Step 3 – Season the Chalkboard

It’s a good idea to do this with any new chalkboard as it ensures the first time you write on the board, it won’t stain. You might remember being in school and the teacher struggling to completely wipe off yesterdays math equations? Well, the board needed re-seasoning!

To season a chalkboard, all you need to do is cover the whole board in chalk. Rub it in really well and then wipe it off.

Ideas for use within a Wedding…

Part of this challenge was to create a wedding centrepiece, so I’m going to try and turn this basic star chalkboard into something a bit more wedding-ready!

Cut Out Star Shapes from Old Book or Newspaper

To decorate around our star chalkboard, I’m using some weighted helium balloons and cutting smaller stars from the pages of an old book. These are then attached to lengths of twine (1-2m) with some paperclips which connect the balloon to its weight.

Paint some Plant Pots

No wedding is complete without some form of flowers, so I thought I’d combine them with the weights needed for the balloons!

Instead of having a bouquet in a beautiful glass vase, I’m opting for some painted plant pots. Not only are these super cheap at just pence each(!) but they can also be dressed up and painted any which way you please for an added personal DIY touch.

The pots I’ve purchased also have removable holes, so they’re suitable for use as a vase too. I’m using Rustoleum’s chalky finish furniture paint for these, which can actually be used on much more than just wood furniture! I really like the finish of this paint and the chalky feel really suits this rustic piece.
