Surprise Bathroom Makeover: Day 3 & 4 – Tiling!

September 18, 2015 - No Comments - 2 min read
Metro Tiles in Bathroom
These two days were a total blur! In my bathroom planning post I mentioned that I wanted to use grey tiles against white walls – Well, I decided to turn this around (purely due to budget limitations) and use white tiles against grey walls. The colour I picked out was by Dulux – ‘Misty Mirror’ which turned out to be more of a blue-y grey colour – but I love it! The tiles are white metro tiles which I purchased from Homebase for a steal at £5 a pack!
Since these tiles were quite small they took MUCH longer to lay than larger tiles. An entire day in fact. On the up side though, they were a dream to cut.. Score and snap is just so easy!

We decided to lay tiles throughout the bottom layer of the entire room. This was quite a practical choice since some of the walls were hideously destroyed from waist down… Plus, it also meant the room was a bit more water proof and water resilient – always a bonus! 😉
We boxed in the pipework and tiled over this to create a nice little ledge on this side of the room. I made sure the height sat perfectly level against the basin too. Although due to the sloping floor, fiddly corners around the toilet and all-round generally being in a manic rush, my tiling was less than perfect! Slightly annoying but I’m hoping it doesn’t show too much….

I also wish I had gone for two full height tiles along the top of the ledge. The tile and a half looks a little silly. Ah well!

The next day was grout day – which took much longer than anticipated. As I grouted in a bit of a rush, I left a little too much grout on the tiles to clean up later… AND BOY, was this a bugger to clean up!!!

But eventually, the room looked much much better! With just one day left we still had heaps left to do… Namely trying to figure out how to fit the shower enclosure!
One post left to come: Completion Day… Or should I say semi-completion day. Watch this space 😉
